I was asked by the President of Newcastle Film Club to participate in a film challenge. On the >tightest< of windows the short-film would be produced.Reading and writing are my hobbies that fill my soul. Doing things that refresh us, is critical so I agreed.

I laughed when she gave me the premise to answer the question "What is the meaning of Life?" and then laughed again when Sam said the whole film needed to be in under two minutes.

"Is that all?" I asked.  The original script is much longer, but here's the monologue that I put together over a cup of coffee one Saturday morning.

What is the point of life?

It’s going to sound cheesy, but I think it’s love. Since the beginning of time humans have written about this higher calling to worship, to acknowledge the power of love and it’s never stopped.

It’s the most powerful force in all the universe... and you can’t get away from it. If we were to fly up into space and travel light years in this ever expanding universe, or if we took a submarine and dove down to the depths of the sea, we would still find love.

Because the vastness of the universe is but a reflection of the magnitude which is Love, and we, in comparison, are just a morning mist floating through. It’s like we get to touch an ethereal thread that unites us to ancient civilizations before us and also to all the untold mysteries and stories that are still to come after we are gone.

Love is the point even when we are confused by it. Love’s not offended by our limited human understanding, our questions, or the fact that most of the time we have no idea what true love actually is. Instead, Love is always kind, especially when we are broken.

Love shows up and places a hand around ours, and then does the most glorious thing in the world: it doesn’t judge us but reminds us of how special we are and that there is no one like us in the whole of the universe so there’s no point in comparing ourselves.

And when we love, we light up the darkness around us and we shine, even if we aren’t always loved in return.

Because it’s the most glorious, wonderful, terrifying, pure, and majestical thing that any human could ever give and it must be the point of it all.
